Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from Tacoma's scuba community have joined forces to clean up the environment on Earth Day. The cleanup will take place at Point Defiance Boathouse, Tacoma. The cleanup removed 810 pounds worth of trash from the waters last year. This is an ongoing effort that protects marine life and preserves the environment. Scuba diving is an enjoyable hobby that can be promoted and shared with others.

Organizers are planning to have scuba divers and kayakers work together to remove discarded fishing gear from the Tacoma waterfront. Once the net has been removed from the water, divers will lift it out of there using a boat elevator. Wounded Warriors may be able to assist with large quantities of trash removal. Organizers are hoping the cleanup will help preserve our waters and provide a unique experience for the community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers have the opportunity to help save endangered rockfish species through participation in a community-based survey at Tacoma SCUBA. This dive is part the Harbor WildWatch citizen science partnership with the NOAA. The survey is open for all divers. No experience or qualification required. Training takes place during the dive brief. Night diving is permitted for those who are certified.

In 1998, WDFW launched a multiyear mark recapture study in Westport, Washington. This monitoring system, which includes five annual releases for black rockfish, is part of a sport fishery tag recovery monitoring system. These fish were released from pinnacles that were fished by Westport charter fishing boats. To determine the individual identity of each fish, two wire tags were attached to the opercular musculature.

You can get rid of a lot of trash in one go

You can go scuba diving near Commencement Bay if you are looking for a spot in the Greater Tacoma area. Earth Day was celebrated by 47 pounds of trash collected by volunteer scuba divers. Octopuses, fishing wire, and glass bottles were all part of the garbage. The Marine Science and Technology Center of Highline Community College (MaST) organized the clean-up. The waters around Des Moines were cleaned up by the MaST in a previous cleanup.

Observation of the wounded bull sea lion

Tacoma, Washington divers had the chance to witness an extraordinary sight while scubadiving. The sight of a bull sealion injured by an arrow stunned divers. According to reports, the shark bite had left the animal blind and had left a scar. Bjorn was rescued and taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles. Bjorn is the name of the sea lion, named after a character from "Vikings". This mighty creature weighs nearly 400 pounds and is now residing at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

The dramatic sight was witnessed by a Tacoma scuba diving team in October. It was the first sighting of a sea lion while diving. The group was so excited, they formed groups to watch the action. The lions' playful nature is also apparent during the observation. Sea lion puppies tend to be in groups of the same age as their parents and will play with divers in shallow water. They also enjoy playing with divers, jumping in the water and giving them toys as well as interacting with bubble stream.
