What is an Aqua Lung?

What is an Aqua-Lung? In its most basic form, an Aqua-Lung can be described as a self-contained, open circuit breathing apparatus. Aqua-Lungs were one of the first types of self-contained breathing apparatus, and quickly gained popularity and commercial success worldwide. This equipment is commonly known as a twin hose diving regulator or demand valve. Aqua-lungs were first used by Emile Gagnan and Jacques Cousteau. They quickly became a hit in the diving world.

Jacques Cousteau

The first self-contained, open-circuit underwater breathing apparatus was created in the 1940s by Jacques Cousteau. His design was based on a demand valve system that supplied compressed air to divers during their underwater breathing. The Aqua-Lung is the name of the device that opened the sport to everyone who had an interest. The Aqua-Lung was the standard for divers all over the world, thanks to Cousteau.

Emile Gagnan

Emile Gagnan (Jacques-Yves Cousteau) and Emile Gagnan (Emil Gagnen) invented the Aqua lung in the 1940s. Its innovative design was derived from the earlier designs of diving helmets in the 19th century. It allows underwater divers to breathe through a mouthpiece that releases compressed air activated by the diver's breath. Gagnan later refined the device's regulator valve, which automatically feeds compressed air to the diver's mouthpiece in proportion to the amount of breath that the diver takes. This device revolutionized diving and allowed divers to explore underwater depths for scientific research, military, and recreational purposes.

The first open circuit demand regulator

Cousteau designed the Aqua lung in 1944. He also patented it in 1946. The Aqua-Lung scuba regulator has been a hit since its inception. Gagnan, Cousteau's father-in-law, and his colleague Emile Gagnan, a French chemist, were also part of the team. They all knew Cousteau’s research and decided that they would collaborate to create Aqua-Lung regulator.

The BC1

The BC1 Aqua Lung (an advanced back inflation BC) is designed for commercial, military and public safety divers. Its rugged design offers unparalleled comfort, fit, as well as stability. The user manual provides details on the different weights that can fit into each pouch. The BC1 comes in two weight capacities: one for your chest and the other for your back. The BC1 can also easily be modified to meet individual needs with the purchase of different weight pouches.

The Titan

Aqua Lung Titan is lightweight and portable regulator that combines the best features from previous generations. Its lightweight design allows for easy use. A soft polyurethane wrap provides a snug fit. Its lightweight and strong design makes it easy to use during extended dives. The device's moderate price makes it affordable for most people. It comes with two stages: one that prevents unwanted flow and another that prevents it from leaking.

The Mentor

The Aqua lung Mentor, a regulator developed in collaboration with the United States Navy is an upgrade to the double hoses used to train divers for their rebreather use. The Aqua lung is not yet available to the public but it is an excellent option for professional divers who are looking for an alternative for the double-hose regulators. Here are some things to keep in mind when buying the Aqua lung Mentor. You must first calibrate it.
