Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers from Tacoma's scuba community have joined forces to clean up the environment on Earth Day. The cleanup will take place at Point Defiance Boathouse, Tacoma. 810 pounds of trash were removed from the waterways last year. This cleanup continues to help marine life and conserve the environment. Participating in the cleanup is a great way for you to promote your business, and also allows you to meet people who love scuba diving.

The organizers are hoping to get kayakers as well as scuba divers working together to clean up the Tacoma waterfront. After the net has been removed, divers will transport it from the water with a boat lift. Some participants will be able to work with Wounded Warriors to remove large pieces of trash and other waste. Organizers are hoping the cleanup will help preserve our waters and provide a unique experience for the community.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can save endangered rockfish species by taking part in a Tacoma SCUBA rockfish survey. This dive is part a citizen science collaboration between Harbor WildWatch and the NOAA. All divers are welcome to join the survey, and there is no survey experience necessary. The training takes place during the dive brief. However, the participant should be certified to participate in night dives.

In 1998, WDFW launched a multiyear mark recapture study in Westport, Washington. This study involves a sport fishery tag-recovery monitoring system that involves five annual releases of black rockfish. These fish were released at pinnacles within the Westport charter fishing fleet. To determine the individual identity of each fish, two wire tags were attached to the opercular musculature.

You can get rid of a lot of trash in one go

Consider the waters near Commencement Beach if you're looking to go scuba dive in the greater Tacoma vicinity. Volunteer scuba divers brought up 47 pounds of garbage from the water this Earth Day. The garbage included octopuses, fishing line, and glass bottles. The Marine Science and Technology Center of Highline Community College (MaST) organized the clean-up. The waters around Des Moines were cleaned up by the MaST in a previous cleanup.

Observation of wounded bull sea lion

A dive group from Tacoma, Washington, had the privilege of witnessing an incredible sight while scuba diving. Divers were shocked to see a bull sealion being wounded by an archer. According to reports, the shark bite had left the animal blind and had left a scar. Bjorn was then taken to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles, where rescuers helped him gain weight. Bjorn is the name of the sea lion, named after a character from "Vikings". This mighty animal, which is nearly 400 lbs in weight, now resides at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

scuba diving vs snorkeling

The dramatic sight was witnessed by a Tacoma scuba diving team in October. It was their first encounter with a sealion during a dive. They were so excited to be able to share the experience with other scuba divers. Observations also reveal the playful nature of sea lions. The sea lion pups will often play in the water with divers and form groups of like-aged friends. They also enjoy playing with divers, jumping in the water and giving them toys as well as interacting with bubble stream.
